Abstract
Guinness has chosen The Arctic World Archive to immortalise some of its rich heritage. This curated collection, organised by Beer, Brand and People, reflects the rich history of the Guinness brand and its impact on communities.
Guinness
Guinness is a much-loved brand, deeply rooted in the communities in which it is present. This community connection began with the forward-looking welfare benefits provided to employees in the 1800s, and continues today with Guinness’s involvement in communities – a global brand with a local heartbeat.
The Guinness Company was founded by Arthur Guinness in 1759, when he signed a lease for 9,000 years on a run-down brewery at St. James’s Gate in Dublin. This visionary optimism set the tone for the development of the Guinness brand world and the largest employer in Dublin. Over the past 267 years, the Guinness brand has grown to be the largest stout brand in the world, brewed in over 40 countries and enjoyed in over 140 countries.
The Guinness Archives
The Guinness Archive preserves the heritage of the Guinness company and brand for over two and a half centuries. Based at the Guinness Storehouse, St. James’s Gate, the Archive is the official archival repository for Guinness and is used widely by the business and the public.
Future-Proofing History
Preserving, forever, this unique collection onto piqlFilm helps to tell the story of the iconic Guinness company.
The collection is arranged into three categories:
- Beer – Patents for items such as dispensing equipment, covering the history of the beer
- Brand – Television adverts originally shot on 16mm film, recently scanned at 4K resolution and restored
- People – Staff newsletters telling the human story behind the brand
Outcome
As well as depositing a reel of piqlFilm data into The Arctic World Archive, Guinness have also commissioned a second reel — including the same heritage information — to be stored in their own archive at the Guinness Storehouse, St. James’s Gate, Dublin.
