Christian Clauwers

Christian Clauwers is a Belgian photographer, explorer, public speaker and author. His work covers the world’s oceans and the polar regions whilst focusing on documenting the vulnerable relation and potential conflict between man and nature. Clauwers scouts the least explored corners of the planet, places which are often hostile, dark, wild, and uninviting, in his quest to reveal their truth. During his expeditions, Clauwers observes the relationship between man and nature from a number of perspectives.

Research Vessel Belgica project includes fundamental ocean data, collected from the R/V BELGICA, the Belgian high-tech equipment research vessel, including sea temperature and salinity, dissolved oxygen, and dissolved inorganic and organic carbon to detect trends and variability at 30 full depth hydrographic stations, and quantify the uptake of anthropogenic carbon in the Mediterranean Sea. These were exactly the same points that were also investigated sixteen years ago. To complete the set of biogeochemical observations, 2 Argo floats were deployed in the basin. This multidisciplinary observing effort will allow scientists to quantify the distribution of zooplankton and study the ecology and variability in the sea life using environmental DNA.
