Entertainment preservation — for the next 2000 years.

Preserve what defines us — our stories, knowledge, and identity. Arctic World Archive helps organizations secure their most valuable entertainment heritage for future generations.

What we do

We secure entertainment heritage in its purest form: offline, enduring, and built for the future.

At the Arctic World Archive, we offer a one-of-a-kind solution for safeguarding cultural treasures of entertainment — storing digital assets on ultra-reliable piqlFilm, kept deep inside the Arctic permafrost.

No servers. No online access. No accidental loss.

From iconic tracks to unforgettable streams, legendary games, and historic sporting moments — we make sure they are preserved for centuries to come.

The Foundation

Launched in 2017 by Norwegian technology company Piql, the Arctic World Archive set out with a bold mission: to protect humanity’s digital memory by storing it on ultra-durable film, secured in a decommissioned coal mine in Svalbard.

By 2025, AWA became an independent foundation, dedicated to neutrality, long-term stewardship, and global collaboration.

Our purpose is clear:
Safeguard the world’s entertainment heritage — reliably, sustainably, and for the benefit of generations ahead.

Who we serve

Because creativity deserves permanence, we defend digital entertainment against cyber risks, data corruption, format shifts, and technological extinction:

Music

Music carries identity, emotion, and memory — shaping cultures and movements across time. From vinyl digitizations to born-digital masterpieces, we preserve sound archives so they survive beyond fragile formats and fleeting platforms. By protecting them offline, we ensure that the soundtrack of past and present continues to inspire future generations.

Streaming

Streaming has become today’s stage for expression — from independent podcasts to global YouTube channels and Twitch communities. We ensure these digital voices, moments, and movements are not lost in the rapid churn of platforms and formats. Preserving them with us means securing a snapshot of modern culture that would otherwise risk vanishing in the noise of constant updates.

Video Games

Games combine art, technology, and storytelling in uniquely interactive worlds. Whether early 8-bit creations or today’s immersive universes, we preserve them to guarantee that the culture of play remains accessible and appreciated in the future. By archiving not just files but also context, we help ensure that future generations understand and can re-experience the evolution of gaming.

Sports

Sports immortalize moments of passion, unity, and achievement. From historic broadcasts to milestone victories, these archives hold the memory of human perseverance. Safeguarding them protects not only results and records but also the emotions, rivalries, and triumphs that defined the moment.
