What we do

We protect craftsmanship heritage in its most essential form: long-term, offline, and future-proof.

The Arctic World Archive offers a unique solution for luxury heritage preservation — storing digital records on ultra-durable piqlFilm, inside a secure vault in the Arctic permafrost.

The Foundation

The Arctic World Archive began in 2017 as a bold initiative by Norwegian tech company Piql: to preserve humanity’s most valuable craftsmanship data in the Arctic, using ultra-durable film stored deep inside a former Svalbard coal mine.

In 2025, AWA became an independent foundation — ensuring neutrality, transparency, and global stewardship.

Our mission is simple:
Preserve the world’s luxury heritage — securely, sustainably, and accessibly for future generations.

Who we serve

Because the past deserves a future, we safeguard digital luxury heritage from cyberattacks, obsolescence, electromagnetic pulses, and digital degradation from:

Luxury & Fashion

In luxury and fashion, every creation is a fragment of history — a silk thread connecting past elegance to future desire. From atelier-crafted gowns, precision timepieces, and iconic handbags that whisper of another era to digital masterpieces born in pixels, the challenge is both timeless and urgent: protect the fragile beauty of yesterday while weaving it seamlessly into the innovations of tomorrow.

Artistic crafts

Artistic crafts are living testaments to human imagination, shaped by hands that remember what machines have forgotten. They are not merely objects, but stories etched in wood, woven in fabric, and cast in metal. In a world of mass production, each piece resists uniformity, carrying the quiet defiance of the unique — a bridge between the soul of tradition and the daring spark of modern creation.

Jaguar Heritage Trust

October 30, 2024

Since 1922, Jaguar has been synonymous with British craftsmanship, innovation, and automotive excellence.

To safeguard this remarkable legacy for future generations, the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust (JDHT) has chosen to deposit a curated collection of historical records in the Arctic World Archive (AWA).

In doing so, JDHT ensures that the story of Jaguar’s rich heritage, from its early beginnings to its contemporary innovations, will be preserved in the frozen vaults of Svalbard for centuries to come.

Our free whitepaper explores:

  • How rare techniques are vanishing faster than they can be recorded.
  • Why cultural institutions and luxury houses are uniting to preserve artisanal knowledge.
